One death and two injuries caused by oxygen cylinder explosion in the intensive care unit of Nanyang Nanshi Hospital

At about 6:00 p.m. on January 29, the oxygen cylinder on a ventilator that was rescuing critical patients in the special care ward of Nanyang Nanshi Hospital exploded, injuring two medical and nursing staff in the ward, and a patient at the site of the explosion died after ineffective rescue, causing controversy.

Oxygen cylinder explosion in the ward

At 8:00 p.m. on January 29, the reporter arrived at Nanyang Nanshi Hospital, located in Zhongzhou West Road, Nanyang City. The corridor on the second floor of a ward building at the back of the hospital was crowded with many nervous relatives of patients.

According to the reporter, two patients, Xian Aiqing and Yan Qiurong, were living in the intensive care ward where the explosion occurred. Yan Qiurong, female, 50 years old, from Ye County, Pingdingshan City, was admitted to the intensive care unit of brain surgery of the hospital on January 28 due to cerebral hemorrhage. At 6:30 p.m. on January 29, when medical staff were rescuing Yan Qiurong, the oxygen cylinder of the ventilator suddenly exploded.

According to hospital officials, a doctor and a nurse who were rescuing patients were injured when the explosion occurred. After the explosion, two medical staff were carried out of the ward for rescue, and two patients were also placed in the special care ward on the second floor for rescue.

The cause of death is controversial

At 10 o'clock yesterday morning, the reporter came to Nanshi Hospital again and saw a lot of security guards added to the second floor. At this time, the hospital told reporters that Yan, the most seriously injured female patient last night, had died.

According to the hospital, the patient Yan Qiurong had no rescue value at that time, and his family asked the doctor to continue the rescue. At that time, an explosion occurred. However, the explosion did not injure the two patients. Therefore, Yan Qiurong's death had nothing to do with the explosion. However, Yan Qiurong's family members did not think so. They insisted that Yan Qiurong's death was related to the explosion and asked the hospital to give an explanation.

The safety supervision department intervenes in the investigation

In the hospital office, Gao Yong, the head of the publicity department, told reporters that they had reported to the health, public security and safety supervision departments immediately after the explosion. At present, the cause of the explosion is under investigation, and the specific number of casualties, names and causes of the accident are not disclosed. In the afternoon, the hospital will give a briefing, but the reporter has not received the briefing until 7:00 p.m. on January 30.

According to Zhang Changju, director of Nanyang High tech Zone Work Safety Administration, the accident has been reported to the Municipal Work Safety Administration, and they rushed to the scene to investigate and deal with the explosion on January 29. As the family members of the deceased refused to provide the tank body of the explosive oxygen cylinder, the relevant departments are coordinating their work.

During the interview, the reporter received a phone call from a self proclaimed "insider" who said that the oxygen of Nanshi Hospital in Nanyang was imported and homemade. The oxygen cylinder that exploded may be filled with homemade oxygen.

After investigation, the reporter found that the basement of Nanshi Hospital does have a self oxygen production facility. According to Zou Jun, chief of Nanyang Food and Drug Administration, the self-made oxygen equipment of Nanshi Hospital has not been approved by Nanyang Food and Drug Administration. Medical oxygen must be used to rescue critical patients according to relevant requirements. If self-made oxygen is used to rescue critical patients, it is suspected of violation.

It is reported that the Nanyang High tech Zone Work Safety Supervision and Administration Bureau had previously punished the self-made oxygen of Nanshi Hospital and ordered it to stop production, but it did not stop production.

According to experts, there are two reasons for the explosion of the oxygen cylinder of the ventilator. First, it may be due to the leakage of the valve of the oxygen cylinder and open fire. Second, the self-made oxygen has not yet reached the national pharmacopoeia standard, and the explosion may be caused by the excessive concentration of combustible gas contained in the self-made oxygen.
